Dansko Fit Characteristics
Dansko models are sized according to European standards, with each size increment comparable to an American whole size.
For most styles, only one width is offered. We offer a variety of models designed to accommodate a variety of foot types.
Fitting the Dansko closed-back clogs
- Fit may be slightly snug when stepping in.
- Fully closed heel provides superior support and protection.
- Smooth, seamless heel counter allows heel to move up and down as you walk. Heel slipage is natural. These shoes are designed to move with
your feet, letting your
foot spread out to it's natural position. Heel slipage will seem natural
after a few days of
wearing stapled clogs.
- Contoured footbed cradles the foot and provides superior arch support.
- For those in between sizes, try sizing up for the closed-back models.
- A variety of closed-heel models, offering such design features as elastic goring, buckles and laces, are available to accommodate both high and low insteps.
Fitting the Dansko open-back shoe and sandal models
- Open-back and sandal models support the full length of the foot.
- For some wearers, the heel of the foot will meet the back end of the shoe exactly; for others, the heel may be slightly forward of the end.
- For those in between sizes, try sizing down for open-back and sandal clog models.
Adjustability is carefully considered in the design of the open-back and sandal uppers, taking the form of buckles, elasticized panels, and convertible heel straps.
Fitting the Dansko closed-back shoe and boot models
- Anatomically contoured footbeds support the foot from heel to toe.
- Asymmetrical toe box follows the natural shape of the foot and allows toes to move comfortably as you walk.
- Footbeds in Golden Gate (closed-back only) are removable to accommodate custom orthotics.
European sizing varies among manufacturers. In addition, each Dansko model has its own unique fit characteristics. Therefore, please refer to Dansko’s size conversion chart below for fitting, and be advised that since all Dansko shoes are handmade, slight variations may occur from pair to pair.

Dansko Professional Clog Fitting Guidlines:

Because each Professional Clog by Dansko is hand-stapled, there can be some variance in fit from one pair to the next in the same size. The Professional can also differ between materials. Not every material will fit the same.

Although it goes against instinct and everything we were taught growing up, the fit at the heel is supposed to be loose. Your heel should move up and down freely when you walk, and you should be able to fit a finger in the space between your heel and the inside of the shoe. This allows the shoe to move naturally with your walking gait.

The “Euro-fit” means that the forefoot of the Professional is boxy and roomy, allowing plenty of space for your toes to spread out, wiggle and be comfortable, and not feel cramped. For some narrower feet, however, this can feel too loose. The Professional is available in Narrow width in some of the basic colorations and materials, and is available in Wide widths in certain materials and colorations. People with wider feet or high arches sometimes find that the shoe fits too snug at the padded instep collar. Certain styles will fit a high instep better and one size might fit better than another. So try on several pairs. Please check our website for the availability of these styles and colors.
We recommend trying on several pairs, because sometimes even the slightest sizing difference between shoes can make a big difference on your foot. After wearing your first pair of Professionals several days you will get used the heel movement. Remember, different leathers will fit differently so every Professional style will fit and vary, but you will enjoy the Dansko comfort and experience. Industry professionals in all occupations wear Dansko Professional clogs because of the awesome comfort and support they provide. Different leathers will work better in different settings. Patent leathers and patent leather prints are made from softer leathers - we do not recommend these for harsh work situations. Cabrio leathers and box leathers are a great choice for occupational use.
